Creative Openers for Your Next Cover Letter

By Sydney Bonner - September 26th, 2024
Resume Tips

Cover letters are a way to put candidates ahead of their competition. Oddly enough, 45% of job seekers don’t include a cover letter when applying for a job. But even the other 55% who do submit a cover letter still find writing one a challenge — especially the opening line.

Instead of using the same old anecdotes or unrelated accomplishments, lean into statements that are engaging, compelling, or even tell a story. Here are ways to send your cover letter to the top of the stack.

Show Excitement

Enthusiasm translates to highly successful and motivated employees, so companies love to hear why you’re excited to work for them. Is it their products? Is it their philosophy? Find the reason and embellish your writing with excitement.

Example:

The first time I saw the Hoover Dam, I was mesmerized and wanted to know how it worked. Since then, I’ve built a career in renewable energy, which is why I’m excited to apply as your next Renewable Energy Project Manager.

Impress With Humor

When looking to infuse your cover letter with humor, connect your experiences and skills to the research of the company in a comedic way. Use humor in moderation, but also don’t be afraid to make the recruiter smile!

Example:

Some call me the Excel Master, others call me the Wall Street Wizard. I’m Danny! Your role as a Financial Analyst reminded me why I love numbers so much. I promise to bring more value to your bottom line than a tax deduction in Q4.

Reveal Passion for the Role

Employers seek out employees like you with genuine passion for the role because this means you could be more likely to stay. Make sure you know the reason that ignited your passion for the industry, and share that in your opening line.

Example:

The first time I read my telescope manual, that’s when I knew I wanted to be a Technical Writer. You’ll find no one else on this side of the galaxy who loves stargazing or crafting instructions like I do, which is why I’m applying to be your next Senior Technical Writer.

Share a Belief

Make an impression on the hiring manager with an opening line that confidently states a belief. This belief can be short but impactful, and should mirror the employer’s values and goals. Let your beliefs fuel your commitment you can make to the company.

Example:

As a Data Engineer, I believe Machine Learning is how we can take this industry to the next level. It could be the start of your company’s new chapter with all the exciting things I can help your team accomplish — but you’ll have to do one thing first: hire me.
