We are seeking a proactive, detail oriented, mid level Field Biologist with strong botanical expertise and vegetation mapping skills to join our Sacramento team. In this role, you will:
Conduct on-site vegetation surveys, map plant communities, and perform wetland delineations.
Accurately identify, classify, and document native, non-native, and invasive species.
Delineate vegetation communities per Northern California protocols.
Collect geospatial and ecological data for environmental permitting, impact assessments, and restoration planning.
Vegetation Mapping & Delineation:
Map and delineate vegetation communities using standard classification systems.
Produce shapefiles of mapped vegetation units
Species Identification & Classification:
Identify regionally significant plant species, special-status taxa, and invasive weeds
Apply vegetation classification systems to field observations
Maintain up-to-date plant species lists and community descriptions
Data Collection & GIS:
Record GPS waypoints, transects, quadrats, capture photo documentation and habitat metrics (soil type, canopy cover, phenology)
Use Collector for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, and related data collection apps when necessary
Regulatory Experience:
Conduct surveys and prepare deliverables consistent with project criteria
Contribute to NEPA/CEQA documents, permit applications, and Section 404/401 delineations
Field Reporting and QA/QC:
Draft clear, concise field notes, map legends, and report sections
Perform quality assurance checks on GIS data, maps, and classification tables
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Botany, Plant Ecology, Environmental Science, or other related field
3+ years of professional field experience mapping vegetation and conducting plant surveys in California
Proficiency with regional plant identification (Central Valley and Foothills flora)
Hands-on experience with vegetation mapping and data collection
Valid U.S. driver's license and ability to drive company vehicles when necessary
Ability to work independently in remote or challenging field conditions
